About Taroona

Taroona, a charming residential suburb just 15 minutes from Hobart’s centre, is located along the scenic route between Hobart and Kingston. Although part of the City of Hobart’s outskirts, Taroona is within the Kingborough municipality. The name “Taroona” comes from the Aboriginal word for sea-shell, specifically referring to the ‘Chiton.’ Today, the suburb is home to 3,121 residents.

The suburb’s history dates back to the early 19th century when settlers from Norfolk Island were granted land here. Initially used for farming, Taroona gradually developed into a residential area, with elegant homes and seaside cottages built throughout the first half of the 20th century. Notably, Taroona is home to Tasmania’s oldest European grave, that of Joseph Batchelor, a young sailor who died in 1810 and is buried above Taroona Beach.

Taroona is known for its lack of commercial development, maintaining its peaceful, residential charm. However, it boasts several notable landmarks, such as the Taroona Shot Tower. This striking, tall, and symmetrical structure was constructed in just eight months back in 1870. For a century, it held the title of Tasmania’s tallest building. Yet, beneath its architectural beauty lies a grimmer past. The tower was originally built for a hazardous task: molten lead, antimony, and arsenic were dropped from the top into cooling water below, forming spherical shot for muskets. Despite its grim purpose, today the Shot Tower is one of Tasmania’s most popular attractions, admired for its design and the breathtaking views from its summit.

The tower itself, made of sturdy sandstone, reaches nearly 60 metres in height and is almost perfectly cylindrical. Its design is remarkable, with a 10-metre-wide base that narrows to just 3.9 metres at the top, while the walls remain impressively thick at one metre.

Inside the tower, 300 wooden steps spiral upwards, leading visitors to the top where they are rewarded with sweeping views of the Derwent River and Alum Cliffs. The climb was intentionally designed by the tower’s builder, John Moir, to be manageable, allowing workers to ascend and descend with ease throughout the day. Remarkably, the oldest person recorded to have made the climb was 97 years old, a testament to the tower’s thoughtful design and enduring allure.

Nearby, the Truganini Reserve offers a steep forested trail leading up to the Mount Nelson semaphore station, providing breathtaking views of the Derwent River. Another scenic spot is Hinsby Beach, a secluded beach accessible from the Alum Cliffs walking track, which runs along the cliffs and offers stunning coastal views.

Taroona also has ties to notable figures, including Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, who grew up in the suburb, and Judith Durham, the lead vocalist of The Seekers, who spent her early years here. Taroona’s blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and serene residential atmosphere makes it a unique and desirable suburb of Hobart.

Steam Clean Team is here to help Taroona residents keep their homes in pristine condition, offering specialised cleaning services tailored to the needs of this beautiful area.

The salty sea air and coastal climate can lead to the build-up of dirt, allergens, and moisture in your home. Our expert carpet and upholstery cleaning services are designed to remove deep-seated dirt, ensuring your living spaces remain fresh and free of allergens. For those historic homes and residences with unique architectural details, our gentle yet effective cleaning methods protect and preserve your interiors, maintaining their original charm.

Given Taroona’s proximity to the water, moisture-related issues can be a concern, particularly in areas like basements and bathrooms. Steam Clean Team offers thorough water damage restoration services, addressing any issues quickly to prevent long-term damage. Additionally, our tile and grout cleaning services are perfect for keeping your kitchen and bathroom surfaces spotless, free from mould and mildew.
