About Howrah

Howrah, a scenic beachside suburb located east of Bellerive and north of Tranmere, offers stunning views across the Derwent River towards Hobart City. With its origins dating back to the early 1800s, Howrah’s name was inspired by the Indian city of Howrah, reflecting the influence of retired Indian Army officer Captain James Fielder, who settled in the area in the 1830s. The suburb has grown over the years and now boasts 9,545 residents. It has developed into a vibrant community with a mix of residential areas and local amenities, including the Shoreline Shopping Centre.

Howrah’s history is intertwined with that of early settlers and notable figures, such as Lieutenant John Hayes, who explored and named the Derwent River. The area is also linked to the broader colonial history of Tasmania, with connections to significant figures like Edward Braddon, a former Premier of Tasmania, and Colonel Crawford, a member of the Tasmanian Parliament.

To the south lies Tranmere, a neighbouring suburb that shares Howrah’s picturesque riverside setting. Tranmere’s history is rooted in the early 19th century, with the ship “Tranmere” playing a key role in the settlement of Van Diemen’s Land. The area has evolved into a desirable residential location, with Tranmere Beach offering a peaceful retreat along the sloping shoreline.

The entire region, including Howrah, Tranmere, and Rokeby, is steeped in stories of early settlers, maritime adventures, and the development of Tasmania’s colonial infrastructure. From the Trywork Point Whaling Station at Droughty Peninsula to the early farming ventures at Droughty Point, the area offers a glimpse into the past while continuing to grow and thrive in the present.

The Droughty Trail, part of the Rokeby Hills Bushland Reserve near Howrah, offers a 6.5km return walk through dry sclerophyll forests on Hobart’s outskirts. As you explore, you’ll pass a creatively painted water tank and a quirky car graveyard before returning to tranquil bushland. The trail also offers occasional glimpses of kunanyi/Mount Wellington across the Derwent River. Ideal for a peaceful walk, the Droughty Trail showcases the natural beauty of the Howrah area.
